SPX has been overbought for half the year

This is not rare.

A social media account with 100,000 followers just posted a warning on X that the monthly RSI of SPX is in overbought territory.

We checked the data on this and it turns out that currently the monthly RSI has been above 70 for 6 months in a row.

SPX monthly candles from 2005 to September 2026 with a 14-period RSI below them. The RSI line is shaded green wherever it sits above 70, showing the overbought runs. The reading at the right edge is 74.08.
SPX monthly candles with RSI(14) beneath them. Every green patch on the oscillator is a run above 70. The current one runs to the right edge at 74.08.

The first thing our backtest revealed is that SPX has closed a month with RSI above 70 in 162 of 666 months, which is 24.3% of the time.

Roughly 1 month in 4 is in overbought territory. That alone should make anyone cautious about calling it a top signal.

Here is every run that reached 6 months, and what SPX did in the month that followed.

That is a lot of strength at a time when traders might think 6 months in overbought territory is a warning sign.
