A single inside bar is usually followed by an ordinary move. Two in a row is different. On the S&P 500 daily chart, both up days and down days run about 25% larger than average after two consecutive inside bars.
An inside bar forms when its entire range sits inside the previous bar, creating a lower high and a higher low. Traders often treat it as a pause before a larger move and look to trade the breakout above or below the inside bar’s range.
We wanted to test if an inside bar actually precedes a bigger move, as the setup suggests?
We ran it on SPX, the S&P 500 index, on daily bars across its full history. For every inside bar we measured the size of the very next move.

The main idea behind inside bars is that a tight range builds energy for a larger move afterward. The data does not support this. The bar that follows a single inside bar is roughly the same size as a normal bar. A quiet bar tends to be followed by another quiet bar.

After two inside bars in a row, the next move does grow. Up days run about 23 percent bigger than a normal up day and down days about 25 percent bigger, so the move expands on both sides without leaning either way.
The next logical question is whether three or four inside bars in a row compress price even more. They almost never happen. Three inside bars in a row occurred only once across the entire history of the S&P 500. Four in a row has never occurred.
This is largely mechanical. Each inside bar requires a tighter range with a lower high and higher low. By the third bar, the range becomes so narrow that price almost always breaks out rather than continuing to contract. The pattern simply runs out of room. Two inside bars in a row is the practical limit, and it is also where the expansion effect reaches its peak.
