VIX vs VVIX Radar

When the Options Market Pays Up for a VIX Jump.

The VIX vs VVIX Radar reads the volatility of volatility. VVIX is the implied volatility of VIX options, how hard the market is bracing for the VIX itself to jump. The radar shows where VVIX sits in its own history right now and, on past days when it was this elevated at a similar VIX level, how often the VIX went on to spike.

Most traders watch the VIX and stop there. But the VIX can sit quietly while the options on it grow expensive, and that second layer, the price of insurance on the insurance, is where the early warning lives. The decision-relevant question is not just where the VIX is, it is how much the market is paying for it to move, and what that premium has meant for an actual spike.

A high VVIX is not a guarantee and a low one is not an all-clear: what follows depends on how elevated VVIX is by percentile, where the VIX itself sits, and the window you care about. Vol-of-vol screaming with the VIX already at 30 is a different setup from the same reading with the VIX at 14. The radar conditions on both at once and reports the forward spike odds from the matching history, so you read the warning in context rather than from a single number.
